Overview

About St Michael's Prep School

St Michael’s is a co-educational school for children aged 2-13 years old.

Joy is at the heart of life at St Michael’s: the joy of our children, the joy of our community and the Joy and Wonder of Learning. St Michael’s is driven by a passionate belief in the value and power of learning: for children, for teachers, for parents and everyone who comes into contact with us.

St Michael’s is a school where each individual is known, valued and celebrated. We want our children to embrace each day and be inspired by their lessons and co-curricular activities.

St Michael's takes great pride in its strong community where families from all nationalities, faiths and backgrounds feel a sense of belonging. St Michael's is a Christian school and a place where families from all faiths and none are welcome.

We believe in providing a rounded education where children can pursue their passions, challenge themselves and enjoy a creative and innovative curriculum. We are continually looking for ways to improve in step with our ever-changing world.

Access to our 100-acre site plays an important role in the pupils’ learning and growth, developing them into mindful and knowledgeable citizens who will care for their environments throughout their lives.

Our growth mindset approach to teaching and learning ensures that every child understands the value of failure in their path to success. St Michael’s children are not afraid to get things wrong, or judgemental of others’ mistakes, and this is something they carry with them.

Our school motto: perseverantia, sapientia, gratia (perseverance, wisdom and gratitude) encapsulates our ethos of striving for success and using our skills to make a difference. These values are instilled daily throughout the St Michael’s journey.

St Michael’s actively manages the inclusion of its people and values human diversity, believing that our different ways of being and thinking adds value to our school community. We are committed to creating and sustaining a more ethnically diverse workforce.

We are working hard to create and maintain an environment where everyone feels welcome, included and that they belong. We celebrate difference and are very proud of the diversity within our school community.

We strongly believe that in order to teach our children about the importance of life-long learning, we must first model this ourselves. Our staff undergo regular professional development and parents are also invited to a range of workshops on relevant topics.

We are confident that when our pupils move on from St Michael’s, they will use the wisdom, skills and values that we taught them to make a positive change in the world.

St Michael's is over 150 years old and many children have gone on from the school knowing they have a responsibility to lead change. Generations of St Michael's pupils are making their impact in the world and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Getting in

St Michael's Prep School admissions and catchment area

Independent - own admissions process

This is an independent school

St Michael's Prep School welcomes admissions enquiries from families all year round. You apply directly to the school via their website enquiry form, email or phone and will be invited to attend an individual tour or Open Morning during which you will meet the Head, Nik Pears and other members of the school community. The first step to registering your child is completion of a Registration Form and payment, followed by a taster session. When an offer is made, payment of a deposit is required. Bursaries are available for children entering Years 3 to 8 and Scholarships are available for children entering Years 7 and 8.

Applications go direct to the school - you do not apply through your local council.

How to apply

  1. 1. Book a visit or open day

Most independent schools want you to visit before you apply - open days and private tours are both usually offered.

  2. 2. Register with the school

Complete the school's registration form and pay the registration fee. Some schools have a waiting list a year or more ahead.

  3. 3. Assessment / taster day

Depending on age, this can be an informal assessment, a taster day in class, or a formal entrance test with an interview.

  4. 4. Offer and deposit

The school makes an offer directly. A deposit secures the place; check the terms and notice period carefully.

  5. 5. Bursaries & scholarships

Ask about means-tested bursaries and scholarships. Deadlines are often earlier than main entry.

Didn't get a place? Ask about waiting lists

Independent schools manage their own admissions. If you are not offered a place at St Michael's Prep School, ask about the waiting list and whether a late application is possible.

How SEND support works

St Michael’s Prep is an inclusive school, serving a wide range of abilities. They are passionate about ensuring every child reaches their potential and understand that sometimes children need differing levels of support or challenge during their education. All their staff aim to meet the needs of the full range of abilities in our school and use a wealth of experience, including high quality multisensory teaching strategies, to ensure every child can flourish. St Michael's Head of Learning Development works closely with teachers to assess the needs of children who may benefit from extra help beyond high quality teaching. The Learning Development Department run a range of morning interventions (before school and during some assemblies) which pupils are invited to attend. These interventions cover the four broad areas of need: Communication and interaction; Cognition and learning; Social and emotional; Sensory and physical.
